The Analytics, Bioanalytics and Formulations group at Novartis San Diego is seeking a highly skilled, motivated, and detailed oriented scientist to support biotherapeutics drug discovery and gene therapies development. In this laboratory-based Senior Scientist I role, you will apply your hands-on expertise to the bioanalysis of large molecule therapeutics, including gene therapies, cell therapies, antibody-drug conjugates, bi-trispecific/ScFV antibodies, oligonucleotides/siRNA and proteins. You will work with teams of research and discovery scientists to develop and implement stage-appropriate large molecule assays for characterization and to support pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic and immunogenicity studies for numerous projects as they progress through the research and development pipeline. Additionally, you will contribute to new technology platform evaluations to improve support for challenging new therapeutic modalities.
About the Role
Key Responsibilities:
- Independently conceives, develops, and executes protein characterization and proteomics-based experiments (particularly targeted workflows in biological matrices)
- Analyzes and interprets data, provides conclusions, and informs next level experiments
- Configures, operates, and troubleshoots LC/MS and LC/MS/MS instrumentation
- Performs a broad range of protein-based sample processing techniques and independently implements new techniques
- Maintains an accurate and detailed notebook, documents experiments and conclusions
- Effectively communicates results and conclusions through reports and presentations
Essential Requirements:
- A Bachelor or Master’s degree in biology sciences, chemistry, analytical chemistry, or related discipline
- At least 2 years of academic or industry laboratory experience
- Ability to design and conduct experiments under minimal supervision, and to analyze, interpret and communicate data to colleagues
- Proficiency in standard sample processing techniques for proteomics and general protein analysis (ex. Protein extraction from biological matrices, enzymatic digestion, SPE, chemical labeling, immunoprecipitation, enrichment, and fractionation)
- Competence in characterizing proteins by LC/MS and LC/MS/MS is required
- Experience in the set up and operation of HPLCs (particularly nanoLC) and mass spectrometers for protein and peptide analysis
- Troubleshoot experiments and instrument issues
- Applied knowledge of MS control and data analysis software examples include: Xcalibur, Analyst, Proteome Discoverer, Skyline, BioPharma Finder, Sequest
- Excellent technical ability, attention to detail, and an eagerness to learn new thing
- Agility and willingness to learn, implement, and teach new bioanalytical techniques to support the evolving portfolio is essential
Desirable Requirements:
- Prior experience in development of targeted analysis of proteins (MRM and PRM) in cells, biological fluids, and tissues is highly desired
- Proficiency in cell culture and biochemical techniques are highly desired
The salary for this position is expected to range between $85,400 and $158,600 per year.
The final salary offered is determined based on factors like, but not limited to, relevant skills and experience, and upon joining Novartis will be reviewed periodically. Novartis may change the published salary range based on company and market factors.
Your compensation will include a performance-based cash incentive and, depending on the level of the role, eligibility to be considered for annual equity awards.
